Analysis Of The Poem Carpathia - 1552 Words

â€Å"Carpathia†, a short story by the poet and memoirist Jesse Lee Kercheval. The short story was written for a segment in her book â€Å"Building Fiction†. The main plot is a fictional story about her parents in their honeymoon. The setting is in April 1912, when the titanic sank. Jesse Lee’s parents were on the Carpathia, a ship that picked up the Titanic survivors. It also focuses on the role of women in society. In her book â€Å"Building Fiction† she explains the differences between a short story and a novella, providing several examples including the short story â€Å"Carpathia†. In her writing, you could feel the bitter-sweetness of her parent’s experience. Specially, her mom. It also points out a big controversial issue in society, gender†¦show more content†¦Her father just stands there observing the water. Since 1852, a code of conduct was stablished to save women and children during a life threatening situation (â€Å"W omen and children first, is a code of conduct dating from 1852, whereby the lives of women and children were to be saved first in a life-threatening situation, typically abandoning ship, when survival resources such as lifeboats were limited†) This code of conduct was stablished after the British ship â€Å"HMS Birkenhead† sank in 1852. When this happened there was not enough lifeboats to save all the people on board, so they let women and children escape from sinking. This gave life to the code of conduct â€Å"Women and Children first†. However, this rule was born purely out of the soldier’s chivalry. Lee makes you picture the solidarity between women as well, she says (â€Å"The women of the Carpathia went to the women of the Titanic, wrapping them in their long warm furs. My mother left my father s side to go to them† pg.166). Previously she describes a cold environment, meaning these women were probably very cold and scared. Huck Finn and Catcher in the Rye Essay Example For Students

Huck Finn and Catcher in the Rye Essay In recent times there has been a considerable amount of media attention surrounding the movement of the youth culture. The topic of teenagers growing up in a violent and consumerist culture has been a hot topic as there has been growing concern over the adult issues that teenagers are forced to deal with in today s society. Generation after generation there has been a division between the rebellious nature of the youth and the adult world. The Catcher in the Rye and The Adventures of Huckleberrry Finn although written in two different eras attempt to capture the essence of youth and explores the central theme of the journey of the adolescent into adulthood. The two central figures of the novels Holden Caulfeld and Huck Finn reflect this central theme through the realities of the contrasting world s they have created and the experiences they encounter. The two novels take place in different eras, Catcher in the Rye tells the story of Holden exploring the modern New York society made up of different social classes and people from every walk of life. We will write a custom essay on Huck Finn and Catcher in the Rye specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Huck Finn explores the world of the Mississippi river in the 1800 s during a time of slavery and also in the midst of the industrial revolution. Both these characters deal with two contrasting worlds on one hand a world filled with materialism, phoniness and urbanization and on the other hand a rural world that is not yet urbanized however has the elements of corruption that are taking form in the midst of modernization. Holden confronts characters that are a product of a modern city such as pimps, hookers, actors and overall a collection of phony people who thrive on worldly possessions and materialism. Huck Finn however deals with different characters who do not share qualities of urban intelligence but show a more natural form of human evil that is not influenced by the wickedness of the city. These characters are a representation of the kinds of people that were the reality of the Mississippi in those times. Holden and Huck deal with adult worlds from different times and different societies and therefor the view each character has towards life differ. However with the different social realities of the two figures they still struggle to understand the adult worlds they observe. Both characters in the midst of a modern and a rural society still encounter corruption, hypocrisy and a world that generally still has faults and evils lurking beneath the people who surround them. Holden is necessarily one of the modern American descendants of Huck Finn, as once said by a critic. Both characters depict the adolescent youth for their generations and eras however both characters are different in their attitudes towards life and the world. Holden is a 16 year old boy that has a contempt for the phony world that encompasses him. His contempt is a result of his cynical view towards everyone and everything he observes and encounters in his experiences. Huck on the other hand is more innocent and childlike as he is warm hearted and in search of adventure. Holden holds the view that everyone in society is phony and protests anything related to phoniness. He hates television, movies, actors and Hollywood as they all represent a phony society. He goes on to comment on Hamlet as a, sad, screwed up guy who should be portrayed that way and not as a goddamn general. This indicates Holden s cynicism and his contempt for phoniness. Huck does not make observations or any criticisms on the corruption of the society around him other than the fact that he says he can not understand much of the ill treatment and behaviour of many individuals. Instead of criticizing or judging the people around him he seeks to create justice in a world of injustice. He sets out to do this by helping his pal Jim a black runaway slave reach his destination of freedom. Huck is too young to understand as much of the world as Holden does and does not have any concrete opinions on the reality that surrounds him. .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb , .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb .postImageUrl , .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb , .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb:hover , .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb:visited , .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb:active { border:0!important; } .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb:active , .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc53eb2835403cdb01bfd23267daf2ecb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Multicultural Education EssayThis is the reason for his innocence and naivete. Holden and Huck both resist to be affected and influenced by the adult world s around them. Holden with his negative attitude and anti-social behaviour refuses to conform with the rest of society. He sets himself apart from the mass of the population criticizng the world for all their faults. He is at the age where he must mature and make the transition into adulthood however he struggles with the hopelessness of the hypocritical world and cannot bring himself to materialize into a man. Huck is a few years younger than Holden and is not yet at the stage where he must make the transition into adulthood however it is first time being exposed to a world beyond his reality and sees the adult world for the first time. He stays youthful with a sense of charm and adventure and combats the adult thieves and hoodlums of the world in the 1800 s. Holden and Huck are also symbols of the all American youth. They are rebellious as they will not listen to any authority figures like parents, teachers and the social norms that are presented upon them. Holden is kicked out of school and Huck is willing to help a black slave in times of great racial barriers. Holden and Huck represent youth and seek to be the saviours of youth. Holden with his wish to be the Catcher in the Rye represents his wish to save or catch children before they make the leap into adulthood. And Huck preserves the greatness of youth from his attempts to be go against the adult world that would condemn for befriending a black slave. This shows the innocence and greatness of youth culture who speaks out against the politics and injustice of the adult world. Huck Finn and Catcher in the Rye are both novels that have been voices for their generations speaking out against the adult worlds of their times. These books also reflect the world in which we live in today where the increasing pressures of the world are making it difficult for young people to realise the greatness of youth. Holden Caulfeld and Huck Finn are truly good examples of the American youth misunderstood by American society and act as good examples to teenagers whom they may be able to identify with.

The Factory by Mary Dilworth free essay sample

In the story The Factory the author Mary Dilworth writes about one of the nowadays main questions: what to choose when we have to decide between family or further a privat life for your own and career. Through out her characters she shows what can happen when the family feels left behind. And puts up the question what is really worth to achieve in life. The narrator of the story always hated the factory (p. 1 l. 1), though she worked once herself in a factory as the bosss secretary, where she also met her nowadays husband (p. 1 l. 20-22). Her hate against this institution is so strong, that she often imagined it burning down (Ive often imagined it without its red bricks, just an etching of black against a red sky p. 1 l. 2-3). I assume that the narrator is rather introvert or at least not very talkative when it comes to her own thoughts and emotions towards the factory. We will write a custom essay sample on The Factory by Mary Dilworth or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page (Of course, Ive never said anything about this to anyone. p. 1 l. 4)Infact it seems as she had grown accustom to it. But not only her attitude towards the factory seems to differ from Erics but also her lifestyle in general seems to be the complete opposite of his; as she enjoys the natural beauty of the night with its stars and stays up late. While he goes to bed early so that he feels fresh then for the next day (p. 1 l. 18) and always reads the business section of the newspaper (p. 1 l. 10). That way focuses on his work in the factory and his daily routine. He didnt have much eduacation (p. 1 l. 18-19), probably because he rather grew up poor and didnt had the chance to get a higher eduacation. This could have caused that he is so ambitious with his factory and his work; that he wants to achieve more than his parents. The factory and his on the factory depending routine are the things that matter to him the most. What can be seen in the title of the text as well as in the fact that in the text itself the narrator never directly says anything about their love and feelings for each other as a married couple, but Erics routine and the factory and how she feels about the factory. To have a guess about the importancy of the factory to him is that he even would have sold almost anything to have [his sign in those flashing neon lights that the city firms can afford] (p. 1 l. 5-8). The fact that he focuses absolutely on his work causes serious relationship problems in the engagement of the narrator and Eric; he is whether working or having a time for himself (He always says that after such a busy day at the factory, he needs to sit and think p. 2 l. 13-14). So the reader gets the impression their arent spending much time together – except for having breakfast, lunch and dinner together or having actually something like a harmonic parship. He treats her work as housewife with a kind of disrespect when is only appearing for the meals during which where he reads instead of having a conversation with her. While he goes to bed early to give his best at work the next day he doesnt notice at all how his wife feels when she stays up at night, hoping the factory will burn down. Summarized it can be said, that there is a lack of communication in their relationship, caused by his ambitions for his success with his factory. Red is in the story not just the colour of fire but also of love and passion, which the narrator misses currently. The gray that her husband became is the colour of routine, boredom and daily routine. In the ending of the story it becomes clear to the reader that the scenery the narrator always dreamed about eventually became true; Erics factory burned down. Easily the reader gets the impression that the narrator could have something to do with it. At least she could have called the fire brigade early, but she just happily watched it burning. I think the story shows that having a successful career isnt every thing to have in life and a very insecure way to happiness because a career can be easily destroyed – like in Erics case by a burned down factory. You cant force happiness to come by being ambitious and focused on work and going to bed early – its not enough to make a happy life. So I think the story also critizes the proverb Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. Because Eric followed this rules and struggled despite of that. Even when you want to achieve a good position at your working place you should though try to find a compromise, something inbetween, because sooner or later you wont be able to work anymore for some reason and then you will have nothing left behind.
